  Get your streamers and pointy hats ready, and be prepared to look up the atomic clock for the first time since last year. It’s New Year’s Eve! New Year’s Eve is that one day every year when we celebrate only having one day left in that year, usually by resolving to try for that big breakthrough next year, but not before first breaking out a bottle of bubbly. For the adult crowd, New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest party nights of the year, with posh New Year’s events filling the clubs in New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, and other major cities in the US and around the world. But for those more inclined to pop open a Martinellis than a Mums, there are plenty of family friendly traditions for New Years Eve as well. Some families prepare special New Year’s Eve recipes, and observe other customs for luck in the coming year. And for those who can’t make it to family gatherings, it’s traditional to send a card or greeting for New Year’s Eve. For the truly generous, you can send the card along with a bottle of champagne – just make sure it doesn’t get too shaken up during the delivery.

  In a way, New Year’s Eve is the oldest of all holidays, since there have been new years since the creation of the planet. But even the celebration of the New Year is something that people have been doing ever since the concept of years was developed, though ancient societies had a lot more difficulty replacing their calendars each year since they were made of stone. The timing of New Year’s Eve became standardized after the development of the modern calendar, and traditions for how to celebrate this event began to form around the world. In the US, the New Year is celebrated by the lowering of a giant glowing ball and the customary confusion as to how the heck Dick Clark manages to do a TV broadcast of this every year. But it is certainly a time to remember friends and family as well; poems, cards, and greetings abound. So as you’re watching the ball drop, don’t forget to also drop off a card for your friends and family – in return, they’ll be sure to keep you in their resolutions.

  He had a dream, and it was far more important than just a national day off on his birthday. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is rightly recognized as one of America’s heroes, and the country celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day the third Monday of January every year. Martin Luther King was one of the principal leaders of the civil rights movement, which led to the overturning of official segregation and was a significant step forward for African Americans, though it was also a step backward for fat Southern sheriffs. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (also known as Martin Luther King Day or simply MLK Day) pays homage to the thoughts and accomplishments of Dr. King, who among other things is noted for his advocacy of nonviolent resistance to accomplish societal reforms. But for those of us today celebrating his legacy won’t find any resistance from family members who receive a friendly card or greeting for Martin Luther King’s Day.

  The history of the day of celebration itself dates back to the 1980s. After the death of MLK, a proposal for a holiday in his honor was first introduced into the US Congress in 1979 by representative John Conyers, who coincidentally was from the very un-southern state of Michigan. The bill met resistance – albeit nonviolent resistance – from certain members of Congress who felt that a paid federal holiday would be to expensive and who wished to only honor people who had held office in the US government. However, after an initial defeat in congress a second version of the bill passed after being championed by popular groups and celebrities. Among the biggest supporters of the holiday was Stevie Wonder, who wrote songs and organized rallies in support of the holiday, making it clear that the holiday if passed would be the sunshine of his life. Today, MLK Day is observed in the United States at roughly the same time as Dr. King’s birthday, and you too can partake in the celebration with a card or greeting for MLK Day. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can put “The Promised Land” as your return address.

  From the heart of the holy land comes a kingly celebration fully equipped with frankincense and myrrh. It’s Three Kings’ Day, also known as Epiphany, and it’s a fitting conclusion to the festive-yet-formal holiday season. In Christian theology, Three Kings’ Day celebrates the arrival of the “Three Kings”, also known as the three wise men, but never the three wise guys. These three were said to have arrived in Bethlehem after the birth of Jesus, navigating by the “Star of wonder” - after all, God is a better navigator than any GPS. Their arrival is an important event in many branches of Christianity, signaling an appropriately reverent end to the holiday season. And what better time to share the joy with friends or family by sending a greeting or card for Epiphany? It’s a great way to show you care, and you can be confident it will take less time than the three wise men themselves did.

  The history of the celebration of Epiphany goes back to the early church. In fact, Epiphany is celebrated quite differently country by country. There are even different dates for the celebration; Eastern churches celebrate Epiphany on January 19 whereas Western ones observe it on January 6 – a problem that is attributed to different calendar systems, or perhaps the East’s reluctance to let the holiday season end. The holiday is frequently commemorated by ceremonies that use frankincense and myrrh, in homage to the gifts brought by the actual magi. They may not be quite as difficult to come by today, but their use still makes for a good celebration. For those so inclined, you can even deliver some frankincense to your friends and family, or maybe just send them an Epiphany card. That way, you don’t have to worry about navigating.
